Website Now First Salesperson in Flooring Retail

By Clare Tattersall

Despite a decline in in-store traffic at flooring retailers amid broader market weakness, consumer interest in flooring products remains active online.

This is according to a new report by Cyncly, a software and content solutions provider to the spaces-for-living industry. The report draws on anonymized consumer behaviour data from more than 2,000 independent flooring retailer websites.

Market Conditions
Consumer confidence remained under pressure through the first quarter of 2026, and housing turnover — the primary driver of flooring demand — remains below historical norms. However, the market shows early signs of stabilization. In its Q1 report, the Canadian Real Estate Association forecast that about 475,000 residential properties will change hands this year, representing a one per cent increase from 2025. While the spring market got off to a sluggish start due to heightened global economic uncertainty, including concerns surrounding the conflict involving Iran, home sales picked up in May, increasing 5.5 per cent from April.

On the renovation front, homeowners who paused plans in 2025 have largely deferred rather than cancelled their projects. As confidence recovers and housing activity improves, they are expected to return to renovations.

Shopping Behaviour
Across the sample of flooring retailers, buyer website visits declined 21 per cent year-over-year and phone call leads declined 22 per cent, while online form submissions declined just five per cent. The roughly 4:1 ratio between falling phone volume and falling form submissions suggests that shoppers are conducting more research online before they are ready to speak with a retailer. Each form submission represents a buyer who has chosen to engage after completing much of that research process online. Retailers whose websites provide useful, up-to-date product information are earning consideration before the first conversation begins.

Category Share
Luxury vinyl and waterproof flooring remains the most-browsed category, accounting for 39.1 per cent of all product views, although its share is down 3.5 per cent year-over-year. Carpet is the only major category to gain significant share, rising 3.1 per cent to 26.1 per cent of all product views. Laminate saw the steepest decline, accounting for just 5.5 per cent of total views and losing 0.8 percentage points of share. Tile and stone, along with hardwood, held relatively steady as a share of products viewed. Total category page views declined 14.3 per cent year-over-year, consistent with broader market softening.

The Content Advantage
One of the standout findings from the report is that blog articles and educational content pages are among the most-visited pages, competing directly alongside product catalogue pages. Content covering carpet trends, water damage guidance and post-installation care captured high-intent shoppers at specific moments of need — planning a renovation, dealing with a flooring problem or caring for a recent purchase. This suggests content is no longer a supplementary marketing activity; it is a channel.

Retailer Action Items
Prioritizing lead management is increasingly important as phone volume declines and each digital inquiry carries more weight. A mobile-enabled customer relationship management system integrated with operational systems ensures no lead is missed and follow-up is consistent. Connecting lead management to the full workflow — from first inquiry through to quote and job completion — helps bridge the gap between digital interest and closed revenue.

Optimizing the digital storefront is essential. Websites that feature current product catalogues, room visualization tools and digital sample ordering move shoppers from browsing to deciding. These interactive experiences build the confidence needed to drive high-intent store visits.

Invest in educational content. Trend guides, installation advice and care content are now among the highest-traffic pages on flooring websites. Practical, helpful content captures buyers the moment they have a question and connects them to the retailer that answered it.
