Tile Council Releases Newest Installation Handbook
The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) has published its 2021 Handbook for Ceramic, Glass and Stone Tile Installation, a guide to assist in clarifying and standardizing installation specifications for tile.
This year’s edition features more than 35 revised methods, including revised movement joint guidelines with new drawings, as well as updates to product selection guides for ceramic tile; glass tile; green building standards and green building products; natural stone; setting materials; and additional products used in tile installations.
Other noteworthy changes are revisions to the following field and installation requirements: grout joint size, layouts and patterns; installation and contractor qualification guide; and using the handbook for specification writing.
The handbook also includes the newest edition of Tile: The Natural Choice, which is packed with pointers for fulfilling green building criteria, and the TCNA’s 2021 Tile Initiative, a collection of bulletins and articles on current industry topics, including ceramic tile testing and research in a pandemic world; new, measurable code criteria for slip-resistant surfaces around pools, spas and hot tubs; and international building code update requirements for exterior adhered porcelain tile.
All changes to the TCNA handbook are aimed at providing more guidance, and improving understanding and problem solving with regard to tile installations. It’s been touted as a particularly useful means of addressing conflicting recommendations or specifications, as can easily occur when a producer or another trade makes a major shift in product or practice in a way that impacts tile installations.
