TCNA Names 2022 Tile Person of the Year

The former president of Mapei has been named the 2022 Tile Person of the Year by the Tile Council of North America.

Giorgio Squinzi was a chemist and businessman who joined his father’s company, Mapei, in 1969 after graduating from the University of Milan. It was here that he contributed to the innovative and revolutionary development of adhesives and chemical products for the building industry.

In 1984, after the death of his father, Giorgio took over the reins of the family business and guided it into a new phase of its growth: internationalization. Mapei entered the U.S. market by opening a plant in Tempe, Ariz., in 1984 — six years after the company opened its first factory outside Italy in Canada, within the industrial district of Laval, Que. The Arizona plant was quickly followed by a facility in Chicago, Ill., in 1985.

Squinzi’s idea of building a number of manufacturing facilities that were located close to consumers led to a period of international expansion for Mapei, which, over the years, would see exponential growth as the company opened new plants on every continent.

He also expanded the growth of the corporation itself with the acquisition of L&M (1996), North American Adhesives (1996), Vinavil (2002), Polyglass (2008), GRT (2014) and, in the 2000s, being awarded the business of both Lowe’s and Floor & Decor.

In July 2019, Giorgio stepped down from his role. He died a few months later in October, at the age of 76.

Since then, his children Veronica and Marco, who began working for the now 85-year-old company in the early 1990s, have been at the helm as CEOs.
