NAFCT Launches First-Ever Certification Program

The National Association of Floor Covering Technicians (NAFCT) has launched a certification program that addresses substrate and subfloor preparation.

“Proper substrate and subfloor prep is critical for a successful finish flooring installation,” says NAFCT director of technical services, Seth Pevarnik, who led the certification committee.

The certification process involves three steps, starting with online courses. Topics covered include wood subfloors and underlayment materials; wood subfloor construction; components of concrete; concrete subfloor construction and placement; concrete problems and causes; thick pour gypsum underlayment and respirable silica. Each lesson is presented as a 30 to 45-minute video that progresses linearly. A quiz must be taken to advance to the next lesson.

Following the courses, hands-on training is provided by NAFCT educational partners. They include Ardex Americas, Divergent Adhesives, ISE Logik Industries, Latricrete, Loba-Wakol, Mapei and Schönox HPS North America.

The final step in the program is successful completion of an exam.

“This certification will advance the installer’s knowledge and skill set,” says Pevarnik.

NAFCT plans for this certification to serve as the foundation for future certifications.

The cost of the program is $100 US.
