FSC Canada Announces Next President, CEO

The Canadian arm of the Forest Stewardship Council has named outgoing president and CEO François Dufresne’s successor.

Monika Patel, currently director of communications and marketing, will assume the council’s head role in the new year.

“I am honoured and excited to lead FSC Canada,” says Patel. “(I) look forward to continuing our important work in promoting responsible forest management and ensuring the sustainability of our forests for all, forever.”

Patel has begun the transition process, effective July 1, to ensure a smooth and harmonious shift in leadership from Dufresne, who will remain as special advisor throughout 2025.

“It has been an honour to serve as president of FSC Canada, and I am confident Monika will continue to drive our mission forward,” says Dufresne, who has been at the organization’s helm since spring 2012. “Her leadership and vision are exactly what FSC Canada needs to thrive in the coming years.”

Patel has devoted nearly 17 years to the FSC network. She first joined in 2007, as a program officer, and later became director of programs and communications before moving into her present-day role in September of last year. Prior to this, she was tapped to serve as interim European regional director and North American regional membership coordinator during the 2021-2022 general assembly with FSC International.

FSC Canada is a non-profit organization that promotes responsible forest management. Currently, more than 47 million hectares are certified according to FSC standards in Canada. The standard is widely regarded as the most rigorous forest certification system among non-governmental organizations, consumers and businesses alike to tackle today’s deforestation, climate and biodiversity challenges. FSC’s ‘check tree’ label is found on millions of forest-based products, including flooring, verifying they are sustainably sourced, from forest to consumer.
