Domotex Announces 2024 Carpet Design Awards Finalists

Twenty-four carpet designs have been shortlisted from more than 200 entries submitted worldwide for the 2024 Carpet Design Awards.

“The competition this year is fierce as there are some outstanding rugs up for awards,” says Jamie Metrick, managing director of Elte in Toronto, and head of the awards jury of international experts from the design and carpet industry. “It’s going to be exciting to see industry veterans battle it out with less discovered designers and brands.”

Three finalists were selected in each of the following eight categories:

  • Best studio artist design: Original small-scale production design from an artist or designer
  • Best modern design superior: Original contemporary designs showing optimum use of materials
  • Best modern design deluxe: Original contemporary design showing optimum use of materials
  • Best transitional design: A new rug that interprets traditional designs for a contemporary audience
  • Best flatweave design: Original rug design demonstrating the flatweave technique
  • Best collection: Contemporary, traditional or transitional design collections demonstrating a common theme
  • Best interior: A high-end customization project or rug installation represented by high-quality images
  • Sustainability award: A rug that is produced with a low carbon footprint or/and that incorporates ethical practices

Now in its 19th year, the awards program celebrates contemporary carpet design and reflects the innovations and trends within the industry. In selecting the finalists, the jury paid particular attention to the design, quality and craftsmanship of the handmade rugs.

“I am fascinated by the passion and creativity that designers and artists possess, as demonstrated by this competition,” says Carin Terins, RugVista’s purchase and creative director who is also a member of this year’s jury. “The mix between contemporary and traditional elements, the variation between colourful and finely tuned neutrals, the beautiful craftsmanship and the importance placed on sustainability all give me great hope for the future of the industry.”

An example from each category finalist will be on display in hall 3 throughout Domotex, Jan. 11-14.

Winners of the eight competition categories will be announced at a ceremony Jan. 12, at the Carpet Design Awards exhibition area in hall 3, booth D24.

The European import trade for handmade oriental carpets will also be honoured at this time. The EUCA Award, presented by the European Carpet Importers Association, recognizes personalities from the industry for significant achievements in the field of handmade carpets.
