Canadian Winner of 2024 Starnet Design Award Announced

Contemporary Office Interiors Ltd. took top Canadian honours at this year’s Starnet Design Awards for its work at JohnQ daycares across Manitoba.

The project began as a pilot program funded by the provincial and federal governments to quickly bring affordable childcare to eight rural and First Nations communities. This was achieved through ready-to-move technology that uses a hybrid construction model. New facilities were built under controlled conditions and then moved to their final site where they were placed on a permanent foundation. The ‘daycare-in-a-box’ delivery model has since expanded to include an additional 12 facilities.

Contemporary Office Interiors was also named the silver award winner in the Canadian Project of the Year category for its involvement in a renovation project at South Calgary Health Centre.

Now in its 26th year, the Starnet Design Awards honour projects that showcase excellence in flooring design and installation. Eligible projects must have been substantially completed in 2023, by the organization’s members in partnership with architects, designers and commercial flooring brands throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Gold, silver and bronze winners were selected by a panel of judges in eight categories, including corporate, education, healthcare, hospitality and public space, mixed-use developments, single-source interior contractor, unique installation and Canadian project. Each gold category winner contended for the overall 2024 Starnet grand prize award.

This year, the grand prize was presented to Consolidated Flooring for its contribution to CIBC’s New York office renovation project, which consolidated multiple offices in Manhattan into a single headquarters.

The competition also featured the People’s Choice Award, nominated and voted on by Starnet members and preferred vendors. Renamed the Rob Starr People’s Choice Award in honour Starr, former director of marketing and member services at Starnet Worldwide Commercial Flooring Cooperative, who passed away earlier this year after a cancer diagnosis, the award went to Universal Metro for the Women and Children’s Centre at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Centre. This project also garnered Universal Metro a silver award in the healthcare category.
