Canadian Retail Sales Fall amid Economic Uncertainty

Core retail sales were down in June by nearly one per cent, reports Statistics Canada.

But while this was the second month in a row that sales dipped country-wide, some areas saw an increase.

Retail sales rose in four provinces, led by higher sales in Ontario (up 1.7 per cent) and, to a lesser extent, Quebec (up 1.3 per cent).

In British Columbia, however, retail sales declined nearly five per cent following three consecutive months of gains.

Core retail sales exclude gasoline stations and fuel vendors, and motor vehicle and parts dealers.

Retail sales were unchanged in the second quarter of 2023, while in volume terms they declined 0.8 per cent.
